Benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushroom

02 Apr Benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Lion’s mane mushrooms are big, white mushrooms that resemble a lion’s mane. Although they’re generally thought of as a single type of mushroom, there are three different species. Hericium erinaceus is the one that’s most widely available.

Lion’s mane mushrooms usually look like white pom-poms and are used as both food and medicine. They are extensively used in Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, India, and China.

The mushroom does appear to have a significant impact on brain cells and could be vital in the fight against cognitive decline in ageing and dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The number of people suffering from dementia continues to rise, affecting more than 51 million people in 2019. It is estimated that, by 2050, there will be 152 million people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

While dementia is considered an age-related disease, it is not an inevitable part of ageing. It is caused by damage or loss to nerve cells, also known as neurons, and their connections in the brain.

There are a variety of herbal products containing Lions Mane. I prefer the Lion’s Mane extract by Gaia Herbs. Most of the studies involved using about 1800 mg per day. This would mean that you need 3 tabs a day  of this supplement to help with reducing memory loss.

Side effects

Gastrointestinal Issues: Some users report upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, or bloating.

Skin Reactions: Skin rashes or itching have been reported in some cases.

Allergic Reactions: If you have a mushroom allergy, you should avoid lion’s mane or consult with a healthcare provider before trying it.

Blood Clotting: Lion’s mane may slow blood clotting, so individuals on anticoagulant medications should exercise caution and discuss with their doctor before starting supplementation.

Blood Sugar Levels: The mushroom may lower blood sugar levels, potentially interacting with diabetes medications.

As with any herbal product, it is essential to consult your physician before use to ensure it aligns with your individual health needs and circumstances.
